Of Facebook, Islam and National Security

KANGAR – Umno Supreme Council member Dr Shahidan Kassim (picture) called for the blocking of the Facebook social networking website if its contents continue to pose a threat to national security.
“If the website content poses a threat to national security and insults Islam, then it is unnecessary to have Facebook.”
(Says Dr Shahidan Kassim)

In regards to the above matter, first of all, let me say a trustworthy statement:
“Facebook is a PUBLIC SOCIAL NETWORK that allows it’s users to exercise freedom of EXPRESSION and COMMUNICATION.”
Regardless of nationality, race and religion, we are humans. The freedom of speech is (supposed to be) a default and unshakable right of a human being. Expressing one’s opinions is, of a sort, a God given right. Every man has his opinions and should be heard before being judged, for we know that not all opinions are right, neither are all wrong.
By what the world has known, Facebook has allowed the global populace the liberty of saying whatever they want to convey to the world outside. This has closed gaps between continents, enhanced communication and allowed sharing of thoughts. This has benefited many around the globe.
Now to address the issue above, was the statement made by Dr Shahidan Kassim valid? Why is it so terrifying that it should be considered as a treat to national security?
