Yasmin cannot but Kugan can, is it?

Media statement by Hartal MSM (July 31, 2009)

How ironic.

When a tabloid belonging to the Utusan group told the truth – i.e. that Yasmin Ahmad was born a man – there was a firestorm of protest from some reporters.

But when Utusan Malaysia was telling untruths, there was pregnant silence from the newspaper fraternity.

When the feelings of Yasmin’s family were hurt by the revelation, there was an uproar from the advertising agencies (she was responsible for the Petronas commercials, and a long time with Leo Burnett), and from reporters and the socialites who were her friends.*

But when the feelings of Kugan Ananthan’s family were hurt by the things printed about him, these people (who raised a stink on Yasmin’s behalf by threatening to pull their ad money from the paper, and the senior editors who drafted a protest letter and led a signature drive, and the “disgusted” Marina Mahathir blog which called for a boycott of “that despicable rag” Kosmo!) were silent.

Utusan Malaysia had reported that Kugan’s family “charged into” and “broke into” the mortuary to see his battered body. The paper’s editorial voice Awang Selamat likened the episode to “action in a Bollywood film”.

Then Awang Selamat had this to say: “The question is, why are the non-Malays reacting in such an extreme manner when it involves a victim from their own race (ostensibly in the name of civil rights and justice) to the extent of causing the government and the authorities to come under tremendous stress?”

He also said this: “If all this while, Malay leaders had the confidence to confront extremism and militancy that involves many Malay groups even though they had to face objections raised by some Muslims, why do Indian leaders behave in the opposite way?”

He accused these Indian leaders of being racists and desiring to become race heroes.

Utusan Malaysia carried another headline warning those concerned over the Kugan case not to behave like braves [‘Jangan ada bertindak jadi hero kes kematian Kugan’].

Awang Selamat – taking it upon himself to speak for his race – claims that Malays and bumiputera organizations see the non-Malays as getting too big for their britches [“kaduk naik junjung”].

On the Yasmin story, the tabloid belonging to Utusan has published a front page banner apology after its staff were castigated by opinion leader Marina as “some truly low creatures”.

So will we see a similar pressure put on Utusan for its other low blows against Malaysians who are neither rich nor famous?

Yasmin Ahmad is indeed born as a male. Everyone in the film/ad fraternity knows this.

For once Utusan reported the truth albeit with cheap sensationalism. I think the outrage is the timing of the reportage and the way the news was ‘broke’ as an exclusive in a cum rag of a tabloid that is Kosmo what do we expect , sensitivity??

As for Marina Mahathirs vitriolic, it’s simply a friend and a society peer being offended. Who gives a shit about what MM says or thinks . She panders to the latte sipping trust fund yuppy clubs. Remember her cowardly indifference and pretend ignorance on the Perak issue?

  2. PakNgahLan says:

    • ANTI-ISA says:

HOI ANTI-RPK. YOU SHOULD CALL YOURSELF A STUPID MAD-DOG…BARKING WITHOUT BRAINS. KUGAN WAS ONLY A SUSPECT AND HE WAS BEATEN TO A PULP….JUST BECAUSE HE IS A SUSPECT. HOW CAN YOU CALL KUGAN A LOW LIFE CAR STEALER WHEN HE CANT EVEN DEFEND HIMSELF. IF YOU WERE TO BE BEATEN TO DEATH BECAUSE YOU ARE ACCUSED TO BE A RAPIST. HOW WILL YOUR FAMILY AND LOVE ONES FEEL???? JUST THINK ABOUT IT. RACE AND RELIGION SHOULD NOT BE HIGHLIGHTED HERE BUT JUSTICE AND HUMANITY SHOULD. JUST THINK ABOUT IT.

Freedom of thought, opinion and speech is something we must all cherish and defend. But let us never forget that “CIVILITY ENHANCES DISCOURSE”.

        Brown Superman,

Do not ever call Rasulullah Chief Terrorist! You even don’t know a very single thing about him. You are too much! Your comment was very sensitive and hurt my feelings as a muslim as you know that there are no such ‘bangang’ comment about your religion made by malaysian muslim. Please don’t cultivate the seeds of hateness between the muslim and non-muslim.

      Woi anti-RPK…

why are u suddenly quiet? Biji dah tenggelam ke dah tak berani nak jawab???
U are worst than animals. How I wish I can curse you right now, macam dongeng si Tanggang tu… I ‘sumpah’ you that one day, you will suddenly be accused of raping somebody’s dog (maybe you are already one) and dragged to the balai to be beaten-up by the PRDM (Polis Raja-Di Malaysia). Your mouth so hancur you unable to talk and you’ll be labelled a dog rapist. You dont have to die like Kugan, that would be too easy… You’ll be crippled, disfigured (I bet you are already ugly anyway) and mute and called a dog rapist your whole life..
Now how’s that??? You dog rapist!!!

  4. pro-rpk says:

    anti-rpk,

FYI. Kugan was never proven to be a car thief. He was a SUSPECT. Please know the difference. Also, understand: Innocent until proven guilty.

What if for a moment, it was established that Kugan was an innocent by stander, hauled up by the police, beaten to pulp in the attempt to force a confession? (something we all know, PDRM does everyday) What would you say then?

Think twice before shooting your mouth. Yasmin might have been one hell of a creative person, but she was a HE and that remains a fact. Why didn’t they call our HIS name during the final rites before burial? As a Muslim, go ponder on it – how much of a hypocrite are we?

  5. Ralph says:

Wise men had said many times – that it is by actions, and not by birth nor by nurture – that defines a person. Are politicians who plunder/rob the country through their offices noble? Are street cleaners who make honest toils from day-to-day “lowly”?

It should not matter us so much as who Yasmin Ahmad was or wasn’t. She had not hurt, robbed, or stealed anyone. Her only “crime” was to be who she is. And with that, she found peace. If anyone were to find fault with that, it is only because that person is jealous.Peace had somehow eluded that person.

We all should remember Yasmin for the beautiful messages that she had worked so hard to convey – unity in diversity – a Bangsa Malaysia – and that we are just Malaysians.

And for once, we want the racist politicians and their mouthpieces to stop breaking and dividing us up. And for once, we just want to forget that we were Malay, or Chinese, or Indian, or Iban, or Kadazan, and what not. And if for once, I could experience that even for just one day – it would have been a life well lived.

  6. zach says:

    anti rpk
U can insult n defame A.Kugan all u want when he is convicted in court n sent 2 prison 4 his crimes
Unfortunately, our police force r blood thirsty n racist type of bunch they ended up killin him b4 he ever got his day in court n be proven innocent or guilty

Sure if a tabloid newspaper post an article that ur mom could be born as a man,u would be mad as hell
But if a relative of urs got killed in police lockup n the MSM spread lies about him or her,how would u feel?

    Note:
    I’m a Malay n a Malaysian
While I admit Yasmin’s death at a young age of 51 was a huge loss 2 the country n abhored Kosmo’s tasteless article posted right after she was buried, I also believe Kugan should be given justice n not have lies about him circulate in the MSM which has hurt his family’s reputation
Even if he is not Malay, justice must be served on Kugan’s behalf because he is a fellow Malaysian n a human being

Yasmin Ahmad’s movies n Merdeka ads after all encourages us 2 practice tolerance n coexistence btw one another regardless race n religion

  7. soondar says:

They only apologised for the timing, the facts remain the same.

  8. anak johor says:

Kenapa pula abatan agama islam diam diri, tak kata apa? Kenapa pula dtulis “allahyarham”? Hoi sibodoh, sudah jangan jadi pembela bangsa kerana Islam tidak bersarankan bangsa tetapi iman seseorang. Hang pi lah mendalami ajaran agama anda, jangan jadi sesat macan ramai orang melayu yang kata diapa islam!

  10. SimpleSoul says:

    Dear anti-rpk!

Was Kugan caught red handed? Did Kugan witness a car theft? Was Kugan proven in court to be a car thief? Please get yr fact right before you spill your emotions! When you die and even God will judge on your deeds! Write using your brains and not your balls.

    Have a goodday!

  11. DrWho says:

i think anti-rpk has got his facts about Kugan’s case all wrong.

he fails to think out of the box..guess he is very typical of an old-timer who talks without thinking.

whatever the case may be, whether its an article about the late Yasmin or the late Kugan, fair and unbiased media reporting is of utmost importance. But then again, being the MSM, there has to be some element of ‘heat and spice’ to raise our eyebrows…its normal isn’t it?

now that both Yasmin and Kugan have left us for eternity, we the ones who are still alive must do and think what is right for the good of the nation and our generations to come.

so please, put on your thinking caps before commenting, especially you, anti-rpk…rest in peace.

  12. Balasi says:

    Dear anti-RPK,

U menang takduh hati perut……..Kugan atau Yasmin sama manusia saja………, by the way lets say a prayer for both of them.
let their souls rest in peace.

    Dear anak JOHOR,

Don’t stir up anything now on YASMIN, let her soul rest in peace…..if bolih sedekah Al Fatihah sajalah , tambah hari ini hari Jumaat.

  13. YM Raja Abdul Razak ibni Almarhum Raja Muda Musa says:

The analogy is crappy, and honestly, I can’t for the life of me fathom why you needed to make an issue out of nothing with this article.

There is hardly any similarity between Kugan’s death and Yasmin’s tarring, except for those planted there by air-headed shit-for-brains ‘journalists” (and oh how I use that term ever so loosely here).

Had the revelation of Yasmin’s secret (if at all true) come before her death, I doubt there would be so much protest. It’s the timing of the Kosmo article that is a sore point. It’s akin to shooting someone in the back — a sheer act of cowardice.

It was whispered among those within the circle that a Malay journalist had indeed threatened to drag Yasmin out of the closet. That was when she was alive to defend herself. She retorted by challenging the journalist to go ahead with the disclosure, if he was man/woman/animal enough to face the consequences. Is it any surprise the journalist never went ahead with the article? Is it any wonder that it was only issued after Yasmin’s death?

    Bloody unethical slimey cowards.

  14. vj says:

I too know about Yasmin but adead person can’t defend itself jut like all the oterh famous who have died and people cna’t stop syaing all the lies and bad about them Gone is gone. Same for Kugun he to was a human the writer should know how to put words and no hurt the parents of KUgan or Yasmin feeling. Sad to say but we can’t stop people from making ulgy remark on the living or dead.

  15. chisinau says:

He/She was born a hermaphrodite. Then, after consultation with the religious authorities, she decided to remain as a “she”. Read it somewhere. Yasmin’s legacies will remain no matter what.

  16. cupid says:

it is ashamed that some of u all , comparing Yasmin and a low life criminal like Kugan (that deserve to die) ,not because he is Indian but criminal is criminal , regardless race and religion.

  17. cupid-not-cupit says:

What can we say. 1stly RULE ARE diff for “some ppl/kind of ppl”
So is all the other thinking comparing Durian and Jack fruit.

RACE PROFILE IS A BIG in public sector and ppls mind too.–(A)

SO other PPL’S FEELING WILL BE TREATED THE SAME WAY OF THINKING (A).

GOD BLESS THE ALL THE GOOD THING THAT YASMIN DID.
GOD WILL DO WHAT is deserved to those Humiliated the others(like KUGAN’s Fmy).

  18. 1MadDick says:

ai, why the fcuk some asshole commentators is comparing yasmin to kugan…

we want to know why those bastardized journo/bloggers starts whacking the tabloid on yasmin article.

but when that utusan racist marderfarker having an orgasm of his life when he spin the kugan case into a race issue, those same fcukers like lockyblur, mainan mamak kutty & their type did nothing but probably applauding like some kera kena belacan…

  19. cupid-not-cupit says:

    YM Raja Abdul Razak….

Sir you are RIGHT. I AM 100% WITH U.

There are forces behind the METRO article .

  20. anti-rpk says:

Kugan is a crook and a car stealer is as true as yasmin ahmad was a man before being a woman ok!

you guys are deluded with opposition propaganda which are full of half truth!!

pls check ur facts first!!! there’s no need to go to court to know he steal a whole lot of cars when he was alive!

  21. YNWA says:

    dear anti-rpk,
u still don’t understand! please be in Kugan’s family shoes. anyway, i think you are hopeless.

  22. blong says:

I was thinking along the same line when these people, inc Marina Det, protested. When the reformasi people exposed the truth, it was welocmed and applauded. But when Utusan exploded the truth, they created a ruckus, including threatenening not to advertise with Utusan. What hypocricy.

  23. jeff says:

Common guys…we are all stuck in our self-mired notion of righteousness. Can’t we get it…it is not about hypocrisy, the have and have-nots or perceived racialistic innuendoes. The simple fact remains that Kosmo’s article simply did not heed the tenets of human decency, respect and timing.
Let the dead rest and let’s all honor their memory…remember the goodness and disregard the pettiness that has come to infect our lives.
