Kiddie porn-OK. Cow heads-NOT OK!!!

by Eyes Wide Open

That seems to be the message, no?

When Information Minister Rais Yatim pushed for the Green Dam internet censorship idea, he was beaten back by all parties including our present PM Najib and past PM Dr Mahathir, who reminded him of Malaysia’s promise that there would be no Internet censorship.

Despite Rais’ grumblings about child porn and other such undesirable elements floating about in the internet, no more was pursued of this matter.

But yesterday, the Star carried the report that Malaysiakini had been instructed to remove 2 videos from their website.

Wow…kiddie porn was not a big enough incentive for MCMC to censor the internet, but racist demonstrations and a Minister defending the demonstrators provoke action from them just a few days later!

What double standards and sheer hypocrisy!

You can watch these 2 videos on Youtube at the following links.

Temple demo: Residents march with cow’s head

In the letter sent to Malaysiakini, monitoring and enforcement division senior acting director Abdul Halim Ahmad mentioned “These videos contain offensive content with the intent to annoy any person, especially Indians.”

Yes, indeed they were offensive. But Malaysiakini didn’t created the content did they? They just recorded the event. But then, it’s obvious the authorities are not worried about the offensive people?

They just want to shut the messenger up!

Just like they did to a certain reporter, when they arrested her under ISA for quoting a person delivering hate speech.

As you can see, the videos have not been edited to put the people in a bad light. In fact, they were straightforward verbatim recordings of what happened and what people said.

In short, the videos merely SHOWED THE TRUTH.

Why SUPPRESS the truth?

The only people I can think of who want to suppress truth are those who want to perpetuate lies. That is as clear as day to everyone – except the people involved in making this decision.

Just what did they hope to achieve in recalling the videos?

There is nothing to be gained.

Those who have watched it, won’t forget it. Those who have not watched it can easily watch it on youtube. And there are various free software to download youtube videos so that people can share it on mobile phones, blogs, and other media.

All their action serves to do is to highlight just how ignorant the people who gave this order are about the new media and how desperate they are to cover up their own vast inadequacies.

That the MCMC was brought in to do the hatchet job is another blow to our country’s already all-time low level of credibility.
