“Don’t tell my mother I work in the Malaysian MSM, she thinks I play the piano in a whorehouse…”

by Eyes Wide Open

World Press Freedom Day was celebrated just a couple of days ago. Do we have anything to celebrate here in Malaysia?

Thinking about the media in our country, I can’t help but recall the title of a book written by Jacques Seguela (founder of the global advertising juggernaut Euro RSCG) – “Don’t tell my mother I work in an advertising agency, she thinks I play the piano in a whorehouse…”

But when I substitute the words “advertising agency” with “Malaysian media”, it seems so much less like an outlandish joke and so much more like reality…

In a Free Malaysia Today report, it was written that a coalition of 10 NGOs are demanding that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak explain allegations that his administration was undermining the professional judgement of media practitioners.

According to Freedom House’s ranking, Malaysia’s record in the past eight years is appalling. From being in 71st place in 2003, we have dropped to 142nd this year out of 195 countries in the world.

We even trail far behind East Timor, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia!

It’ll be interesting to see what Najib has to say about that…especially since he had a big doodad celebrating the Malaysian media recently and patting it on the head, calling it the best in the world!

I wonder when our Malaysian media community will ever face up to the shame of their profession being prostituted. I wonder when our media people would rediscover their dignity.

I’m glad at least 2 from among their ranks have decided enough is enough.

What about the rest?
