HMSM BREAKING NEWS – Seismic changes at The Star

By Reina

The Edge’s editor-in-chief Ho Kay Tat signed the contract on Thursday night making him the Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director of Star Publications that publishes the leading English daily The Star.

Ho’s appointment has taken many by surprise but a change in the leadership of Star Publications was to be expected as a natural turn of events once there is a change in the MCA leadership.

When Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek defeated Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and became the MCA President, many are expecting appointees of Ong (Star Publications’ Executive Deputy Chairman Datuk Clement Hii and executive director Ng Beng Lye) to be on their way out. They were appointed to the board by Ong in January 2009.

It is rumoured that both Hii and Ng are on their way out but sources say that MCA will not be considering Royal Selangor International (formerly Selangor Pewter) Managing Director Yong Poh Kon as a replacement for Hii due to Yong’s position as economic advisor to the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat government.

Instead, a banker from Deutsche Bank is being strongly considered as the person who will take charge of the business.

Group Chief Editor Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, who was recently made Executive Director, may move up the hierarchy with rumours saying that he could be occupying the position of Chief Executive Officer, a position presently occupied by Datin Linda Ngiam.

With all these rumour flying around, the coming AGM for Star Publications on May 24 will be very closely watched.
