What spooked Malaysia-Instinct?

by Sharifuddin A Latiff

First, Malaysia-Today got DDOS-ed.

Now, another news portal (sic), Malaysia-Instinct, got blipped but I think it’s self-inflicted i.e. they deliberately closed the front-door and started changing the locks.

Confused?

Well, the Sun’s TeRence Fernandez took offense with someone who is probably trying to impersonate him with the by-line ‘TeRRence Fernandez’ writing nasty stuff at this site which pretends to uphold journalistic standards. With other by-lines such as Satu Hala, Unta Belang and Lebah Kota interspersed with more ‘proper’ names, whomever it is that runs this site seems rather spaced-out. Or extremely arrogant. Or perhaps, both at the same time.

TeRence has already made a police report and will also make a bee-line to the MCMC as soon as he’s home in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, this pseudo news site have gone M.I.A.

Seriously, if they have names like Big Dog, A Voice, A Kadir Jasin, Ahmad A Talib, Tun Mahathir, Wong Chun Wai, Rocky Bru, Barking Magpie, Sakmongkol47, The Unspinners and Wee Choo Keong, etc gracing their blogroll, surely their web servers must be in pristine condition although it’s parked in a restaurant/pub somewhere in PJ section 14 (compared to RPK’s battered multi-million hits per day gizmos).

Furthermore, it appears that in the confusion of ‘restoring’ their website, two ‘BBC’ postings went missing as shown below:

Did Malaysia-Instinct deliberately spike these two postings?

But then again, RPK bashing should be kosher for these blokes and to some extent, the ‘Beeb’. Ok, maybe not for the latter coz the Brits pulled the plug at Hardtalk recently which could have made some notable characters here in Bolehland turn white themselves.

Technically, however, for on-line publishing, they can’t hide the evidence (as illustrated above). We can thank Google cache and screenshot technology for this.

Therefore, Malaysia-Instinct must be running scared for another reason.

And that would be an interesting story for another day, eh folks.

  1. GET RIGHT INSTINCT TO REACH PRECINCT

Better get on the right side of our instinct
Lest we lose our bearing and become extinct
We can also try our very best to be distinct
Whether or not we get to the ultimate precinct

It takes a brave soul or a fool to put out what Malaysian Instinct did, the very “public” revelation of a notable public figure. There is no mistaking its intent, sarcasm or satire, no excuse in what was produced by blog owner.

Knowing Raja Petra, chances are he lets this slip but I rather he initiates action and seek damages from parties associated with Malaysia Instinct. There is ample evidence of bad intent/character assassination for a grandslam 3-in-1 claim of malice, slander and libel – really.

  3. casper says:

Beyond dollars and cents, it would be of public interest if we could put a face behind people/parties associated with Malaysian Instinct. That alone would be sufficient ‘justice’, a very public shaming of blog owner should be the order of the day, don’t you think RPK ?

But for this type of guy you sent them oversea with no one knowing his identity as the potong one he will drop his teeth to enjoy and take advantage of situation. His saliva will run wild. Don’t be a hyprocrite, brother. Must be a kampung boy who is blinded by his achievement today. Katat mentality.

The site may still be alive at this link: http://www.malaysia-instinct.com/online/

Can someone verify if they are the same thing / created by the same owner?

Josh, it’s the same site but with a different head banner/front page layout. Malaysia Instinct went ‘off-line’ for about 48 hours over the weekend and re-emerged with its new look. And a new blogroll too. But with some missing links to previous articles. Why? And I’d like to know who’s the owner too – shar101.

This was the ping I did from an offshore ping site. It doesn’t indicate that the site is being DDos’ed

This was the error page generated by the squid proxy used by malaysia-today.net. Interestingly anwaribrahim’s blog also share the same web-space. The error is NOT CHARACTERISTIC of a DDOS attack. The proxy server was configured to DENY ACCESS. If the proxy server had been hacked there should be a log of the activity but Malaysia-today.net is claiming DDOS and not being hacked.

If the site is DDos the squid proxy will DROP REQUEST if its buffer overflows but there will be time when you will be able to get through. In this case it is totally inaccessible and the error message from the squid server says it all.

I do not like to fool or cheat others and neither do I wish to be manipulated. In everything test it as a goldsmith test a piece of gold.

Thank you, Mad Logic, for the technical information.

None of us at HartalMSM are tech savvy enough to delve into DDOS mechanics nor utilise web tools to analyse/verify it.

However, interestingly, a ‘ping flood’ would have precipitated a ‘DOS’ in another sense, wouldn’t it?

I contacted several inviduals on 7th Sept when MT was initially down and one or two was still able to get through. MT seems to have recovered on the 8th but went down again on the 9th.

Anywayz, for myself, conspiracy theories cut both ways but the ‘golden’ truth will remain unscathed.

Hopefully, we’ll live to see it emerge.

      P.S. Tech talk rocks.

      • Mad Logic says:

Ping flood is inefficient. Incomplete triple handshake used by internet protocol would really hold the system up.

I do not discount nor dismiss the possibility that denial of service of MT had been done before. Indeed the first time it happened I had offered a solution in soc.culture.malaysia. My investigation then was that MT was really being blocked. On another occasion I found out differently. MT themselves shut the proxy down and then started crying wolf and offered solution (alternative DNS site) that really doesn’t work. This time round they used the same tactic but instead claimed to be DDOS’ed.

If we look at life’s event through historical baggages of prejudices, pre-conditioning and blinkered pre-conception then truth will always escape us. I tried posting the above in 3 different blogs but were censored. These blogs spoke eloquently of truth and of justice and yet when pure unadulterated facts are presented would find it distasteful or unpallatable.

Truth is never golden. Oftentimes it is bitter, unpleasant and uncomfortable.

        _________________________________________________________

Hartal MSM: About your censorship by the other blogs, yeah, we’ve been told by our other readers as well. One reader informed us how Kit Siang’s blog censored his comment that (specifically this adjective) “useless” Palestinians were given scholarships when Penans weren’t but however (LKS) allowed the worst insults to be published about the Jews.

That’s part of the reason why we blog about the Middle-East. The double standards in Malaysia is truly sickening!
