So Malaysian is No.141 in the world Press Freedom Index 2010. But y’know, we’re still ahead of Nigeria (145), Congo (148), Swaziland (155), Saudi Arabia (157), Libya (160) and Somalia (161).

For trivia, we’re providing one factoid for each of the countries in the bottom 10 having the least press freedom.

10. Rwanda
In 1994, the majority Hutu committed genocide, killing some 800,000 minority Tutsi

9. Yemen
President Ali Abdallah Saleh has been in power since 1978

8. China
Imposes Green Dam software-filtering to block Internet content considered objectionable

7. Sudan
International Criminal Court wants Sudan’s president Omar al-Bashir to face genocide charges for killing black Africans. The regime favours Arabs; Sudan is considered part of the Arab world although it lies in northern Africa

6. Syria
The state exercises strict Internet censorship and blocks opposition sites. Oh yah, and Facebook and YouTube too

5. Burma
In September 2007, the military cracked down on protesting monks

4. Iran

3. Turkmenistan
One of the “10 worst countries to be a blogger” (ouch!) Religion Islam 89%, ethnicity Turkmen 85%, official language –Turkmen 72%

2. North Korea
Its official name is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, kinda a misnomer, just like it’s a miscasting of former beauty queen Erra Fazira to play Siti Hasmah in Mahathir — the Musical

1. Eritrea
Formerly the northernmost province of Ethiopia and borders Sudan. It is separated from Saudi Arabia by the Red Sea. “Eritrea is a source country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation” — CIA World Factbook

On the top end, the best 5 countries with the most press freedom:

1. Finland
2. Iceland
3. The Netherlands
4. Norway
5. Sweden

They’re all very cold countries! Brrrr … The weather must have something to do with it.
