It’s only Suzuki la, not the World Cup

By Reina

Just about all the newspapers front-paged Malaysia winning the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup with a 4-2 aggregate against Indonesia in Jakarta last night.

The Star went one step further by doing a wrap-around. A wrap-around is when the front and back pages are one. Usually this is done for extremely special stories. One time The Star did a wrap-around for the Highland Towers disaster – a photo showing the crash site alongside the towers that were still standing was spectacular.

But for the newspapers to front-page the win and run several spin-off stories in the first few pages of the newspapers is really carrying it too much.

It’s not like we won the World Cup.

This is just an ASEAN-level championship, for crying out loud. Besides, many of us may have only heard of it about one or two months ago but it has been around for 14 years. And Malaysia only won the tournament now.  [ASEAN has 10 member countries].

Year: Champions

1996: Thailand
1998: Singapore
2000: Thailand
2002: Thailand
2004: Singapore
2007: Singapore
2008: Vietnam

Barisan Nasional probably instructed the mainstream media to play up the story to raise people’s spirits. After all the news about price hikes and the much-criticised mega-projects (eg MRT), the Barisan needed something to boost our faith in the ruling government.

An old trick which many governments turn to: create a “hero” or a “set of heroes” for people to look up to and forget their sorrows.

I’m not well-versed with Indian politics, but I think the opposition party in Tamil Nadu way back in the 60s used movie stars for this purpose. Famous screen idol MGR danced and sang into the hearts of the poor folk. His songs and dialogue were littered with “people power” kind of theme and the poor folk lapped it up. They then voted the opposition party in.

I won’t be suprised if our ‘Suzuki’ heroes are given land and titles, taken on a roadshow around the country, have songs written about their success, and later use them for political campaigning.

Meanwhile and according to script, Najib has plugged in and announced a national holiday.

[On a personal note – You did good, guys]

A success indeed is a success, regardless whether it’s SUZUKI CUP, HONDA CUP or PROTON CUP. It’s worthy to CELEBRATE!!!

Moreover, tomorrow is the FINAL DAY of a BEAUTIFUL 2010 & most people are already in CELEBRATION MOOD. Most companies had made plans to declare a HALF DAY WORK prior to the HOLIDAY ANNOUNCEMENT made by PM.

So, what’s the BIG HOO-HA over the HOLIDAY ANNOUNCEMENT???

Well, let me tell you this OPEN SECRET, ok??? It’s NOT whether NAJIB is trying to win brownie points or whatsoever but it’s more like PAKATAN RAKYAT is JEALOUS our dear PM is getting POPULAR by the days.
PAKATAN RAKYAT dread the feeling they are destined for 6 FEET UNDERGROUND by the minute & they had ran out of ideas on how to combat BARISAN NASIONAL. Thus, the last resort is to SPREAD & PROMOTE a simple word called “JEALOUSY”

What a SORE LOSER Pakatan Rakyat is, rite??? They SUCK big time lah.

  2. Now Suzuki cup- next, World Cup.

  3. Stupid holiday says:

Friday public holiday is indeed very stupid. It’s only ASEAN level football. Really cannot believe PM Najib can stoop so low to gain some cheap popularity votes. Imagine the economic loss of whole nation not working for one day. Really DUMB idea.
